free air temperature enrichment

Worldwide, temperature have risen by 0.6o to 1.0o C over the past 50 years and are predicted to rise by 2-6o C over the next century. Global warming has been predicted as a consequence of the Earth's rising atmospheric CO2 concentration. Both the higher temperatures are likely to affect the productivity of agricultural crops with changing environment in the future.

A new technique called Free Air Temperature Enrichment (FATE) was developed to artificially induced canopy temperature in open field conditions without the use of enclosures. The FATE system simulates global warming in small ecosystem of limited height with the imformity of the thermal radiation and canopy temperature across the plot.

These new technologies based on series of micro-computer control systems for effective control of temperature and CO2 concentration needs to be developed. An engineering analysis of these technical advances may result in more realistic and cost effective methods for elevating temperature and CO2 in open-air. These technologies will be a window into the likely furure of ecosystem function in a CO2 enriched warmer world.
